ABORTION RIGHTS ARE HOSPITALITY WORKER RIGHTS!
What does it mean for hospitality professionals to have bodily autonomy if they don't have the economic ability to exercise it?
Abortion access is a workers' rights issue.
Reproductive freedom goes hand in hand with economic security, workplace power, and the ability to make decisions about your own life.
Worker rights aren't only about what happens on the clock.
They're also about whether or not workers have the money, time, healthcare, safety, and freedom to make decisions about their lives off the clock.
Legal Rights in Illinois
Abortion is legal and protected in Illinois.
The Illinois Reproductive Health Act protects your right to make decisions about reproductive healthcare, including whether or not to have an abortion.
There is no mandatory waiting period and a spouse or partner does not have to consent.
Illinois law protects people traveling to Illinois to access abortion care.
Illinois also has workplace protections. Employers cannot discriminate against workers based on their reproductive healthcare decisions. A worker shouldn't have to explain an abortion, pregnancy, miscarriage, or reproductive health decision to their manager just to request time off or accommodations.
But legal doesn't always mean accessible.
Legal ≠ Accessible
Illinois Medicaid covers abortion care, but navigating healthcare coverage can be difficult for workers whose employment, income, or insurance changes frequently.
For hospitality workers, accessing abortion care can also mean:
Missing a shift = lost income
Last minute schedules = harder to make appointments
Traveling for care = transportation, lodging, childcare
Recovery = time away from work
For tipped workers, missing even one shift can mean a significant loss of income. For workers living paycheck to paycheck, these barriers can make your legal rights feel far out of reach.
So the worker rights question isn't only: “Is abortion legal?”
It's also: “Can a worker actually access that legal right without risking their income, their job, or their safety?”
Healthcare shouldn't require choosing between your body and your paycheck.
Abortion Rights are a Hospitality Issue
If hospitality employers want to support their workers, reproductive healthcare has to be part of that conversation.
The hospitality industry should be a loud supporter of universal healthcare, paid sick and family leave, predictable and flexible scheduling, workplace protections for reproductive healthcare, and workers bodily autonomy.
Supporting abortion access means supporting the conditions that allow workers to actually exercise that right.
Workers should have more options when they need them without having to worry about retaliation, lost wages, or losing their job.
Know your rights. Protect each other. Build power.
Your rights mean more when you know how to use them and when we make sure other workers know theirs too.
Know your rights.
Learn what protections exist for you at work.
Use your voice.
Ask questions. Speak up. Document what happens.
Support your coworkers.
Share resources. Believe workers. Stand together.
Fight for better workplaces.
Paid leave. Predictable schedules. Fair wages. Healthcare. Safety. Bodily autonomy.
When we know our rights, support each other, and organize together, we build workplaces where no one has to choose between their livelihood and their autonomy.
